Richmond is at the eastern edge of our 21 county territory, on the Ohio line, and it is one of the more architecturally interesting places we work. A large share of the housing was built between roughly 1880 and 1930, in an era when exterior detail was structural rather than applied. That means real brick, cut stone sills and lintels, deep bracketed cornices, wraparound porches with turned columns, and original wood trim that is often still the original wood. Lighting that housing well is mostly a question of restraint and attachment method.

Why Richmond's Housing Stock Changes the Install

The attachment problem. Brick and stone do not take a clip the way a modern fascia board does. Driving a fastener into masonry or into mortar creates a water entry path that will be worse next spring than it is in December, and in a freeze and thaw climate that damage compounds rather than staying still. We use non-penetrating systems throughout: clips that grip gutter and shingle edges where those exist, and mortar-friendly hangers or adhesive systems where the surface is masonry. Nothing gets stapled or screwed into shingles, trim or masonry.

The detail problem. A house with a bracketed cornice, a turned porch and stone window surrounds already has a great deal of visual information on it. Outlining every available edge produces noise. On this kind of architecture the better result usually comes from choosing which lines to state clearly, typically the primary roofline and the porch, and leaving the rest to be lit indirectly or not at all.

The documentation problem. Century old exteriors have existing wear. Loose mortar, cracked sills, soft trim, previous owners' fastener holes. We photograph and note existing condition during the site assessment before work begins. That protects the homeowner and it protects us, and on older housing it is not optional.

What We Install in Richmond and Wayne County

Seasonal holiday lighting, with design, commercial grade LED product, install, in-season service, January takedown and off-season storage included.

Permanent LED roofline lighting, which is worth a specific mention in Richmond. On a historic home the strongest argument for a permanent system is not the convenience, it is that the attachment happens once. A channel installed correctly one time, with attachment planned for that specific masonry, replaces an annual cycle of putting something onto a hundred year old exterior and taking it off again. Fewer attachment events on fragile material is a genuine preservation argument, not just a sales one.

Commercial and downtown work. Richmond has a real downtown building stock, multi-tenant and mixed-use, plus the professional and medical buildings and retail corridors you would expect in a city this size. Multi-tenant properties can run under a single coordinated design and one invoice.

Wayne County Weather and the Install Window

Richmond sits in the east territory, which on paper runs milder than the higher western counties, but the practical issue here is not depth of cold, it is frequency of crossing the freezing point. Repeated freeze and thaw cycling is harder on roofline clips, gutters and electrical connections than a single sustained deep freeze, because every cycle moves the material slightly. We specify clip systems and route wiring for that cycling rather than for one hard freeze. Install runs early October through the first week of December. Takedown starts in January.

Booking in Richmond

Because Richmond is at the far eastern edge of the territory, our east territory routing matters to your scheduling. We batch east territory work, so booking earlier gives more date flexibility here than it does closer to Seymour. Book by Labor Day for first choice, by mid-October for a comfortable pre-Thanksgiving slot.
